How to get new saves in Spore?

The newest game from Maxis, Spore, is the game in question. In the main menu (the part of the galaxy) there are a number of save slots. I recently ran out of the room due to the fact that many people play in my profile (at least six) and took all the saves. Is there a way to get more? If you delete an existing one does come back later?
