What are the differences between the xbox system?

I'm buying my son an Xbox system for Christmas, but I'm very confused about what you get! What are the differences between an Xbox 360 Pro and Xbo 360 arcade? Why come in different levels of RAM (ie 256MB)? Can I get memory cards for it? Help! Help! Help! I can not ask know the difference, I'm getting the system!
